Argentine Tango Lessons : Stokeinteignhead : Lesson 7 & 8
Stillness and Cross
Aim of the lesson:
To encourage couples to use pauses in the movement and for leaders to lead the cross.
Warm up exercises
Walking forward and backwards
Forward and backwards ochos
Lapis: quarter, half and full turn
All dancers to practice moving their body weight from one foot to the other – particularly sideways and on to a bent back leg – remember to keep your body upright and don’t lean backwards.
Lapis:
One leg stretched out in front, weight on back leg, half circle outstretched leg with simultaneous turn of body in direction of leg, close feet together at end of move.
Stillness
Use pauses in the music to get into a pose. Stop movement for a moment before dissolving the pose.
Cross
Followers
Start with a side step to the right. Step with left leg straight back, step with right leg straight back, then cross left leg in front of right leg; change weight from right leg to left leg and wait till leader will resolve the cross.
Leaders
Open with side step to your left. Step with your right leg straight forward, outside your partner’s right side, step with your left leg straight forward and open your right shoulder (bring it slightly back); close your right leg to your left and straighten your shoulders, which will line your partner up with you (your partner should have her legs crossed now).
Resolve cross for example by walking forwards or by leading your follower into an ocho.
